Nearly one-third of journalists say they have been bullied, according to a union survey. The National Union of Journalists’ 2006 membership survey questioned 1,436 NUJ members and 31 per cent of respondents said they had been bullied. Sector by sector, 40 per cent of those working in newspapers had experienced bulling, while it had also affected 21 per cent of those in TV and radio, 25 per cent of those in magazines and 25 per cent per cent of those in PR. The survey also found that 16 per cent of respondents said they experienced discrimination either on the grounds of race, sexuality, age or childcare arrangement. The survey found that 47 per cent of Asian respondents had experienced discrimination, as had 33 per cent of black respondents, 33 per cent of white respondents and 18 per cent of mixed race respondents. Ethnic minorities and women were the main targets of discrimination. The survey found that 68 per cent of women as opposed to 32 per cent of men reported being discriminated against.
